CORNWALL GARDENS

SINGAPORE

The Cornwall Gardens house, originally designed and constructed in the late 1990s, drew inspiration from the fashionable Balinese resort architectural style of that era. However, the emphasis on form overshadowed functionality, resulting in spaces that needed improvement.

Our task was to enhance the functionality of the house and breathe new life into worn-out areas. This involved reconfiguring spaces and incorporating new equipment, finishes, and fittings. The main focus of our design intervention was the second-floor bedrooms. The original layout featured disproportionately large bathrooms and cramped wardrobe spaces, necessitating a complete reconfiguration. We carefully reconsidered the sizes of the bathrooms, ensuring a better balance with the bedroom and wardrobe areas. Additionally, we created a new family lounge by enclosing an outdoor terrace and walkway that previously served the bedrooms, making the space more usable and enjoyable.

On the first floor, we addressed the issue of the outdoor cooking area being adversely affected by strong breezes, which disrupted the stove fire and caused smells and oils to permeate the laundry area. To resolve this, we enclosed the cooking area, providing protection and separation from the laundry space. Furthermore, we redesigned the dry kitchen to improve workflow and enhance its connection to the breakfast area.

Throughout the project, we maintained a deliberate and respectful approach to the original theme and design language of the house. The introduction of new design elements and materials, including the stunning tiles from RICE that added a modern touch and pop to the bathrooms, was executed with subtlety. Our aim was to seamlessly integrate these new elements with the existing aesthetic, allowing them to enhance the overall design without overpowering it. From the carefully selected light fittings and latticed window frames to the thoughtfully chosen color palette of the built-ins, every decision was made with the intention of harmonizing with the existing aesthetic and ensuring a cohesive and visually pleasing result. The result is a space that feels refreshed and updated, while still honoring the original design language of the house.
