HINDHEDE DRIVE
SINGAPORE
A pedestrian underpass and a series of improvement works were undertaken as part of the Urban Redevelopment Authority's Rail Corridor (Central) enhancement project. The objective was to create a safe passage while seamlessly integrating the design with the natural surroundings.
Nestled amidst lush greenery and running parallel to Hindhede Drive, the newly constructed underpass was meticulously designed to evoke a connection to the site's historical context. The use of off-form concrete, intentionally left unfinished, adds a rustic charm that harmonizes with the natural environment. This deliberate design choice allows the underpass to weather naturally over time, developing a distinct patina that enhances its visual appeal.
The unfinished surfaces of the concrete not only contribute to the underpass's rustic aesthetic but also serve as a testament to the passage of time. Embracing imperfections, such as cracks and irregularities, adds character and authenticity to the structure. Visitors are invited to appreciate the underpass as a living entity, constantly evolving and adapting.
Above the underpass, the restoration of the old rail bridge incorporated elements that enhance the overall experience. Safety barriers and handrails were seamlessly integrated, prioritizing visitor safety. Low ambient lighting creates a serene ambiance, complementing the natural surroundings. To promote accessibility, recycled aggregate flooring was installed, utilizing existing gravel found along the rail bridge.
