OEI TIONG HAM PARK

Located on two plots of land in the esteemed Good Class Bungalow area, this family home exemplifies a design philosophy that seamlessly integrates with its surroundings and enhances the natural landscape. The architecture's intentional understatement creates a harmonious connection with the environment.
Respecting the topography of the land, the design employs buildings that gracefully sit along the contours of the site, minimizing the need for excessive cut-and-fill. This approach not only preserves the natural contours but also creates a house of simple yet elegant forms that cater to the family's needs, with distinct areas segregated for entertainment and family rooms. In contrast to neighboring houses that face the street, this residence is shrouded behind lush planting and a sprawling garden, preserving an element of mystery and adding to its allure when viewed from the street.
Taking inspiration from Mies van der Rohe's Farnsworth House, the living room is designed as a separate pavilion made of fair-faced concrete, which serves as a backdrop to embrace the surrounding greenery. A sheltered link bridge connects the pavilion to the main house, creating an outdoor transitional space that allows the owners to be constantly aware of the changing environment while maintaining a strong connection to their natural surroundings. The intentional use of materials and clean lines reflects a timeless aesthetic, emphasizing the elegance and simplicity of the home and its integration with the natural elements.
The structural columns of the pavilion are positioned on the outer edge, offering flexibility in how the space can be used and furnished, akin to Mies' concept of "universal space." The pavilion is accompanied by a 25-meter lap pool, enhancing the visual appeal and providing a tranquil oasis.
The main house comprises basement, first, and second storeys, connected by a sculptural staircase that wraps around the lift core. The second storey, housing the bedrooms, is conceived as a monolithic brick block with small fenestrations, distinguishing it as the most private area. The monolithic block partially cantilevers to create a sun-shading overhang for the west-facing, full-height glass facade on the first storey. The basement features a gym room that opens onto a lush courtyard garden, with a ribbon-like steel spiral staircase leading to the outdoor barbecue area on the first storey.
Elements from the owner's childhood home, such as fair-faced bricks and terrazzo floor tiles, are reinterpreted to contribute to the new architectural vocabulary. The intentionally restrained palette of materials allows the spatial qualities and fine craftsmanship of the building elements to stand out.
Through intentional understated architecture, a seamless integration with the natural surroundings, and a careful consideration of the site's contours, this family home creates a strong sense of place. It respects the topography, enhances the natural landscape, and exemplifies a timeless elegance that harmonizes with its environment. The result is a captivating residence that seamlessly blends with its surroundings, offering an immersive and harmonious living experience for the family.
