LICHI AVENUE

SINGAPORE

This intermediate-terrace was originally designed in the 1950s by Swan and Maclaren Architects, the oldest architectural practice in Singapore. The present-day owners aimed to create an unpretentious home that would provide a strong sense of place for their young family, while also accommodating elderly grandparents. Despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic such as the escalating construction cost and unpredictable timelines, both the design process and construction were successfully carried out. The final result is an elegantly simple design that emphasizes openness, warmth, and an abundance of natural light.

While the existing structure of the house was preserved, the interiors underwent repurposing to enhance spatial fluidity and adaptability. The centerpiece of the house is an open kitchen that warmly welcomes visitors upon their entry. To cater to the needs of the elderly grandparents, a rear extension was added. This extension features a granny suite with a sitting area on the first floor, and a master suite situated above it. A new airwell was introduced between the old and new extensions, effectively bringing in natural light and ventilation to the central area of the house.

On the second storey, the front bedrooms were transformed into a new playroom and a living area with a loft-like ceiling, which seamlessly connects to an outdoor terrace. The playroom was designed to be a flexible space that can easily be converted into a study or an additional bedroom in the future. The bedrooms were intentionally positioned away from direct view, and a flight of steps serves as a threshold leading to the master bedroom, creating a sense of privacy.

Overall, the design successfully integrates the historical fabric of the house with contemporary adaptations that cater to the specific needs of the owners and their family. The focus on openness, warmth, and natural light contributes to a welcoming and comfortable living environment.
